Make North Park Your RV Destination

One of the hardest things about RV Living is finding a good spot to camp. You are constantly on the lookout for a spot that isn’t too crowded, yet is close enough to pick up a strong wireless signal. You are always looking for that sweet spot of a place that is level, has beautiful scenery, and most of all affordable—if not free!

North Park should be at the top of your list for RV destinations in Colorado. Not only is Jackson County surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges and alpine forests, it also has plenty of wildlife, public land, and scenery to enjoy while you enjoy the RV life. From cool summers to the vibrant fall colors in Autumn, and even the spectacular views of winter, North Park has what you’ve been looking for on your RV trip.

Public Lands for RVers

Whether you are just passing through, or you have come to North Park for a few days of outdoor R&R, there’s plenty of spots to park your RV and take time exploring everything North Park has to offer. Jackson County is a destination spot for hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, OHV riding, and so much more!

Save Money and Enjoy the View!

A huge benefit to traveling the US in an RV is how much money you can save while being on the road for long periods of time. While most travelers are spending insane amounts on hotel rooms, RVers get to have the convenience of home at a fraction of the price of renting a room for the night.

The big drawback, however, is not always being able to find a place that will accommodate a large RV. With plenty of public land, from BLM to State and National Forest, you can find all sorts of spots to set up camp for just about any sized rig, whether it's a Class A pusher or a Class C camper.

With limited hotel and vacation rental space in North Park, during busy weekends, rooms tend to fill up. The beauty of visiting North Park in an RV is being able to bring your home with you and having a nearly unlimited supply of places to stay in the county!

BLM

Bureau of Land Management land in North Park is typically in the inner basin of North Park, which is a highland desert climate of sagebrush, sandy soil, and grasslands. BLM typically has a 14 day limit for camping, unless otherwise indicated. You can find interactive maps of BLM land at BLM.gov. There are just too many spots to mention here. Always be mindful of private property as many access roads to public lands pass through ranch land and private property.

You might encounter pronghorn antelope, jackrabbits, deer, ground squirrels and prairie dogs, coyotes, raptors, and other small wildlife. Large game such as elk and moose browse throughout the year in these areas too! What you won’t find in North Park are venomous snakes. BLM lands are great places for boondocking and dry camping. The rugged terrain and 360 degree mountain views are Instagram perfect for Overlanders, and give you a great jumping off point to head into the mountains for the day.

National Forest RV Camping

RVers can find plenty of spots in the National Forests that protect forested areas in Jackson County. Home to the Routt and Arapaho National Forest as well as Medicine Bow National Forest, these areas have provided outdoor recreation, as well as grazing and forestry for generations.

Fee boxes are available at established campgrounds such as Hidden Lakes and Big Creek Lakes. Compared to hotel or RV park stays in many places, the sites are clean and provide pit toilets and fire rings at most established locations. Check with the Forest Service website to learn more. The site shows the location of campgrounds as well as a portal which allows you to reserve campsites and prepay for your RV stay.

National Forests in North Park also provide access to some incredible hiking trails, such as Rainbow Lakes hiking trail, Grizzly Helena, and many others. Lake fishing is a big attraction to North Park, and many Forest Service sites specialize in accessing these areas by providing boat ramps and inspection areas. Here are some popular campgrounds you can reserve through the National Forest Service website.

  • Teal Lake
  • Hidden Lakes
  • Summer Lake
  • Lakeside
  • Big Creek Lakes
  • Teller City

State Forest State Park

Colorado’s only State Forest runs from the Neversummer mountains near Cameron Pass along the Medicine Bow mountain range towards the Wyoming border. From Michigan Reservoir to the North Sandhills, you can visit postcard perfect sites like Kelly Lake, Lake Catherine, and much more over thousands of acres of wild countryside.

The best way to find your ideal campsite is to visit the State Forest State Park website and book your RV campsite online. This way you can avoid the problem of getting to your favorite site and finding someone already parked there. Some of the more popular spots to camp are going to be found near Gould and the Moose Visitor Center and Michigan Reservoir Campgrounds. With dozens of campsites near water with mountain vistas, forests, and accommodations such as fire rings, vault toilets, and even fresh water and dump stations at Michigan Reservoir, it just gets easier.

Ranger Lakes and Bockman campground are favorite sites for seeing moose. Just remember to be bear aware and keep food and other goods protected from hungry wildlife. Set your GPS to 53337 COHWY-14, Walden, CO. Call 970-723-8366 to get your spot!

RV Dump Station Facilities in Walden

The Town of Walden provides an RV dump and potable water station for travelers. Several dumpsters are also available for your convenience. We would rather provide a place for your trash than have it blowing around and ruining our landscape. There is no charge to use these facilities, but donations are appreciated and highly encouraged.

Leave No Trace

Following a leave no trace method of traveling and tourism are a great way to ensure a place remains beautiful, not just for the other visitors, but also to make sure somewhere is just as beautiful the next time you get to visit. Whether it's next year or ten years from now.  Take only pictures and leave only photographs and we all get to enjoy North Park year round, year after year!

Pack Your Trash

Thoughtlessly throwing your trash out while camping impacts wildlife and the overall environmental health of an area.  Carelessness can also lead to closures and decimation of this beautiful landscape. Always travel with the intention of leaving a place better than you found it.  From cleaning up after your pets to making sure trash and food waste are disposed of properly ensures everyone gets to fall in love with North Park.

We Will See You Soon!

North Park in the autumn is one of Colorado’s best kept secrets. We have the fall foliage to see without all the bumper to bumper traffic. Hunting season brings people from all over the world to seek out big game, and there’s still plenty of time for a lazy day at the lake before fishing turns into ice fishing. Frost mornings and warm afternoons await you as the year winds down. Take your RV to North Park to experience the real Colorado and make memories that will last a lifetime!
